Dare We Say, 2020 Wasn't All Bad?

See ya never, 2020! The year is coming to a close and while this year was a hot mess [to put it simply], it wasn't all terrible. Like many others, we learned to adapt to the quickly changing times. People started working from home, and consumers found a renewed interest in small and local businesses. As a midcentury modern furnishings and home décor store that enjoys a bit of fun, too, touchGOODS is grateful to have maintained a sense of hope throughout the pandemic.

A interior design pros, we geek out over new products. This year, lighting became one of our most exciting areas of design growth. We built a new lighting room (more to come on that soon) and added awesome lines like Ferroluce and Il Fanale. Ferroluce is an Italian, family-run company with a passion for lamps and fixtures that exude quality and craftsmanship. The collection is large and diverse, highlighting traditional materials and artisanal practices to create unique, vintage-style lamps that convey simpler times. It's the rustic touches that really make the line stand out. Industrial table lamps in particular were a hit!

Inspired by old-world tradition, the Il Fanale lighting collection is beautifully hand-crafted using Old World techniques with classical materials like copper, brass, iron, ceramic, and Murano hand-blown glass. The company has roots in the Venice area, and produces a wide collection of modern yet rustic lighting for both indoor and outdoor for residential and commercial applications. We love their mix of clean lines and modern elegance with more industrial-style pieces, appealing to all design types.

Our beloved Gus* Modern wowed us this year with a new collection that adds super lush comfort to their traditional midcentury modern designs. Keeping an eye for structure and detail, the new Podium Modular collection features more of a loungey feel with low and deep seating and plump cushions that still maintain that signature, angular look. The line is also super customizable with seven core components that can be arranged in unlimited configurations to suit any vision or layout.

Of course, we had to have a little fun in 2020 and make light of the craziness in the world. Hand sanitizer became a necessity, and who better to remind you to keep your hands clean than Dr. Anthony Fauci and Governor Andrew Cuomo? Schitt's Creek reminded us that when the world turns to, well, sh*t, there's still love to be found... especially in the form of must-have products like prayer candles, greeting cards, coffee mugs, and yes, more hand sanitizer. Keep 'em clean, people!

Of course, these were just a few things that brought us joy this year. Above all, we are grateful for those that continued to support touchGOODS in these unprecedented times. Like many other small, family-owned businesses on the East End, we rely on our community to keep us going. We've loved seeing how customers incorporate their touchGOODS finds into their living spaces, hearing stories about making their homes into workspaces and virtual classrooms, and having home be a place to find peace in unsettling times. We will continue to try our hardest to make you feel safe in our store, and hopefully even share a few laughs. Keep on wearing those masks, friends! Thank you and we'll see you on the other side.
