Hope and Strength Through Color: Pantone Color of the Year

Oh, a New Year. Sure, we look forward to the promise of all it holds, just like everyone else. But for interior designers, each year the unveiling of Pantone's Color of the Year is the spark of inspiration we look forward to in an effort to feel renewed, motivated, and energized. 2020 was, well, you know... and for 2021, the authority on color trends has released two independent shades - Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating. It's a message of hope and strength, a vision that powerfully resonates across the globe. Bring a sense of positivity, thoughtfulness, and endurance into your home with these midcentury modern furnishings and décor...

Ultimate Gray is truly the perfect backdrop in modern design. The neutral color serves as an anything-but-boring canvas that can be paired with any color scheme. It's a strong and thoughtful color with endless shades that mix and match well with various textures and fabrics. We particularly love gray for large furnishings, like sofas and beds.

GUS* MODERN FOUNDRY BI-SECTIONAL

Gus* Modern's Foundry Upholstery Series bi-sectional highlights minimalist design without sacrificing interest. Clean lines complemented by plump cushions offer a level of sophistication in living spaces.

GUS* MODERN PARCEL BED

The Parcel bed by Gus* Modern is the quintessential modern platform bed. Sculptural yet inviting, the look is softened with classic French seams.

We understand that with every new color trend, one can't simply redesign an entire home. We're not really about that, either. The beauty of midcentury modern design is that you can easily incorporate new styles into existing spaces while maintaining a cohesive look. We love switching up accessories through the seasons, swapping décor items like throws and pillows in fuller winter fabrics for lighter options come spring. To add a hopeful pop of color in the cheery and optimistic Illuminating yellow, we suggest taking it a step further with lighting.

FERROLUCE INDUSTRIAL TABLE LAMP C1650

Obsessed is an understatement when talking about Ferrocluce's industrial table lamp. The nostalgic design illuminates a time past that still belongs to us. Like the rest of the collection, the Vintage Giallo (yellow) color allows the piece to assume a personality all its own.

FERROLUCE URBAN CERAMIC WALL LIGHT C1523

Another Ferroluce rockstar lighting piece is the urban ceramic wall light. From industrial to transitional to traditional, this fixture works in any space.

RETRO PLANTER

Don't forget your plants! Provide a happy vessel for your green friends with Hip Haven's retro planter. This planter is an authentic reproduction of the vintage originals, in shape, size, and the distinctive texture of molded fiberglass.

Mixing and matching various elements in Ultimate Gray and Illuminating yellow in designed spaces is something we look forward to this year. With all of the uncertainty that cast the darkest cloud over 2020, the choice of Pantone's choices for Color of the Year have us inspired not just as designers, but as human beings. We hope the melding of these independent yet complementary hues offer that same sense of hope and strength in your home, and your life.

Straight from the source: As people look for ways to fortify themselves with energy, clarity, and hope to overcome the continuing uncertainty, spirited and emboldening shades satisfy our quest for vitality. PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power. PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation. The colors of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time, Ultimate Gray quietly assures, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience. -Pantone Color Institute
